The Feminine Divine Photo Exhibit.
Now there was a time when we used to say that behind every great man, there had to be a great woman. But in these times of change you know that it's no longer true. So we're comin' out of the kitchen. 'Cause there's somethin' we forgot to say to you. We say sisters are doin' it for themselves. Standin' on their own two feet and ringin' on their own bells.
Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves 1985 ~ Annie Lennox
Over the years I have been privileged to photograph creatives on the fringe of the artistic world. From The Burning Man Festival to my new home in Spain, I have captured countless spirited moments. All in full expression. Amongst some of the many inspirations something noticeable emerged. Having unique access to underground art events, I was building a portfolio yet to be focused and curated.
This idea was benignly planted decades ago before picking up a camera again. In the late 80’s my spiritual guide Louise Haulk posed to me something I considered a breakthrough thought. Paraphrasing her, she said that I should keenly watch as the future unfolds. Women will authentically empower themselves. In the patriarchy, women once had to rely upon seduction, martyrdom or manipulation to gain power. I pondered the empowerment of Amelia Earhart, Gertrude Stein, Lee Miller, Helen Keller and many more including every sufferjet of that era, yet they were outliers. I guess the men didn’t get the memo. Yet over the past thirty five years, with an exponential momentum, I have witnessed so many women step into true empowerment, leadership and position. Each time harkening me back to Louise’s prediction.
It was during the global pandemic that specific relationships were formed and purpose was taking root. It was the combination of isolation, connection and inspiration. Then I read Clarissa Pinkola Estés book Women Who Run With The Wolves as I photographed a firebrand group of women committed to advancing the feminine spirit everywhere. An inspiring story for another discussion. As a result of this period, I shaped a diverse visual world I note as The Feminine Divine.
Here I consider varied archetypes, many on the stage: the matriarch, the queen, the seer, the performer, the wise elder, the dancer, the priestess, the mother, the warrior, the siren and the healer as these images gathered through my career.
